City of East Grand Forks Reminds Residents to Avoid Illegal Dumping

The City of East Grand Forks operates a “Green Site” in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue NE. This location has a drop off area for grass clippings and an area for the disposal of branches and other natural yard/garden waste. The “Green Site” also has multiple recycling bins that can be used to drop off recyclable cardboard, paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. The “Green Site” can be used by East Grand Forks residents who have an access card that can be acquired from the City of East Grand Forks for a fee of just $2.00 per month.

There have been numerous issues with people illegally disposing of a wide variety of household garbage and junk in the recycling bins and on the ground in the “Green Site”. If these items are placed in the recycling bins it can cause an entire load of recyclable materials to be sent to the landfill rather than actually being recycled. Garbage/junk mixed in with the yard waste or grass could damage machinery and can be dangerous for city employees.

The City of East Grand Forks recently installed a new video monitoring system and two residents have been issued citations for illegal dumping at the “Green Site”. Anyone caught using this area for the disposal of any unauthorized items is subject to being cited for illegal dumping and may have their “Green Site” privileges revoked. Anyone who observes someone involved with illegal dumping (at the “Green Site” or elsewhere) is encouraged to contact the East Grand Forks Police Department at (218) 773-1104.

Residents who are looking to dispose of items that will not fit in their regular garbage cans can contact the East Grand Forks Public Works Department (218-773-1313) for information on home pick up of these items. Public Works also has dumpsters available for use at their main facility (1001 2nd Street NE) for low or even no cost during regular business hours.
